In addition to the digital signal pins stipulated by the DVI standard, the DVI connector can also include traditional analog signal (VGA) pins. This design is to maintain the versatility of DVI so that different types of screens can share the same connection line. With different implementation functions, DVI connectors are divided into three types:

• DVI-D (Digital digital signal; single link or dual link)

• DVI-A (Analog signal)

• DVI-I (Integrated hybrid; both digital and analog signals are available; single link or dual link)

In addition, sometimes the connector that makes the second set of DVI links is called DVI-DL (dual link) to emphasize the transmission capabilities.

Some newer DVD players, TVs (including HDTV) and projectors use the so-called "DVI/HDCP" connector, which is exactly the same as DVI in appearance, but the data it transmits is encrypted by the HDCP protocol to prevent illegal copying. Nowadays, computers equipped with DVI interface display cards can often use the above-mentioned display devices as large-scale screens. However, since most display cards produced before 2007 do not support HDCP, they may be limited by copyright protection technology and cannot use the highest resolution. In addition, the analog pins of DVI-D are deliberately designed to be shorter than the same pins of DVI-I to prevent users from accidentally inserting the DVI-I male connector into the DVI-D female connector.
